Introduction
Grandmaster Garry Kasparov is coming to Belgium for the second year in a row to play chess against two dozen opponents in a simultaneous chess tournament at the Alfacam television studios in Lint on Tuesday 14 October 2008.
Three Belgian entrepreneurs – Inge Geerdens (CVWarehouse), Gabriël Fehervari (Alfacam) and Jan Callewaert (Option) – have invited Mr. Kasparov in order to promote the game of chess in general and with young children (aged 6 to 12 years) and their parents in particular.
By playing chess, children learn to analyze and assess difficult situations, act fast and under pressure. Chess enables them to make links and learn to think strategically. Those same qualities will prove to be indispensable later on in life, when they want to be successful in business too.
Did you know that a pilot project in the province of Limburg has proven that a child’s attitude changes when chess is part of the curriculum in primary schools? While playing chess, children learn to have respect for others. More information on this subject can be found online at www.schaakacademie.be (in Dutch).
Chess is not an official sport in Belgium, making it difficult to find financial support to coach young talented chess players. This event aims at changing that. We want to:
promote chess through entrepreneurship and strive for chess as being part of the curriculum in all primary schools in Belgium;
promote chess as a sport so that young talented players receive the necessary coaching and can take part in international tournaments.
